If your idea of a summer holiday is on the water.. in the sun..

Gastes is 380 miles due south of St Malo, and a 45 minute drive south of Bordeaux. Spain is just over an hour due south, past Biarritz and Hossegor for surf fiends. The house is ten miles from the coastal towns of Mimizan and Biscarosse, and the nearest supermarkets are six miles away in Parentis. The whole area is the Foret de Landes, flat and covered in cycle tracks. If you like seafood, there are oysters sold everywhere, harvested from Arcachon (40 minutes drive) which is home to Europe's largest sand dune, the Dune de Pyla.

Gastes is tiny: it has a weekly market, a local corner shop, a very local bar and a beach bar/cafe...on the beach. Croissant et cafe au lait? Sur le plage! The beach is supervised by a lifeguard during the season. Apart from swimming, lazing, sailing, waterskiing, windsurfing, kitesurfing....if you're still stuck apparently the fishing's great (carp, bream) and out of season the area is a haven for bird-watchers. If you like French food, then try in Parentis at Chez Flo or the classic Restaurant Cousseau. For anglophiles, there is the large La Reserve campsite & mobile home park 3 miles away, with its pools, restaurant, bar, shop and beach.

Maison du Lac is British owned and lies a 3 minute walk from the sandy beach in Gastes - a small French village on the edge of the Biscarosse lake. If watersports is your thing, then this is the best place we have found for long holidays. We've got two Hobies, a skiboat and several windsurfers around the house. This is probably the most child friendly watersports area you can find - the lake is no more than waist deep for almost 100 metres, its eight kilometres long and the water is around 22 degrees in the summer! Oh, and the house will easily sleep 10...
